Scanner Appeal The Chirk Hospital Circle of Friends has launched an appeal in order to raise funds for an Ultrasound Scanner to be situated at Chirk Hospital . This is to replace the x-ray unit which was removed from there last December because it had reached the end of its lifespan. The Circle, itself, is putting up a substantial amount of money towards the scanner, which will serve a large area, and will enable Ceiriog valley residents to be scanned at Chirk, instead of travelling to Wrexham. Bright yellow collecting boxes are now in the surgery and several public places and residents are respectfully asked to give generously.
Thanks My many thanks and kind thoughts go to the numerous friends in the Glyn Ceiriog valley for the many cards, messages and visits I received whilst both in hospital and now at home re-couperating in Minafon, Glyn Ceiriog. My thanks extend to the medical staff, nurses, careers of the Maelor Hospital , also the district nurses here in the valley. My special thanks to my daughter, Lindsay for the travelling she had to make from her home on the Wirral, Cheshire to Wrexham, for visiting and the attention to me at home. Shortly, I hope I will be strong enough to meet you personally to express my thanks to you all. Diolch yn fawr, Tom Tyson
Thank you Kate Barber wishes to thank all the kind friends who visited her when in hospital and at home, or sent cards or messages for her recovery. She is quite well now and is regaining her strength slowly. Thank you all very much.
Grateful thanks Mrs Hilda Hughes of Berwynfa, Glyn Ceiriog, passed away on the afternoon of Tuesday, 20 July. We offer grateful thanks to all who helped my mother so much, especially at the Chirk, Llangollen and Maelor Hospitals , from Eric, Bill and family.
Congratulations Torik Homes, grandson of Joan Roberts, Erwallo, congratulations on gaining a First Class Honours Degree in Journalism and Media at Cardiff University.
What can you do! I will never forget the time in 1953, when every pupil in Llanrwst Grammer School went to the local Luxor Cinema to see a film of the first people to climb the world's highest mountain, Mt Everest, they were, Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay. Hillary was just 33 years old. His feat afforded him fame, wealth, and the realization that he had already lived a remarkable life. Tel: 01691 718086, m: 07760 328752
Dear Editor, Glyn Valley Bus Service I totally agree with the comments of your correspondent Trudy Foster in last months Glyn News regarding the Glyn Valley Bus Service. From personal experience I would disagree with the comments made by Cllr Mrs Barbara Roberts that the drivers of the shuttle bus wait in Chirk for the Arriva services and missed connections are 'rare'. Numerous times I have had to run across the road between bus stops—how long will it be before an accident occurs? The time allowed for connection on the Oswestry/Chirk route is just four minutes, on some services. The Arriva buses are frequently late departing Oswestry bus station—thus making the connection impossible. I am sure that passenger numbers are down as people, particularly the elderly, are not using the service with the difficulty over connections. We have had good weather since the inauguration of the the new service—in the depths of winter over an hour wait in Chirk for the next bus will be very uncomfortable. I would urge that passengers pass on their comments/complaints to Mr Keith Garvey, Public Transport Officer at Wrexham CBC, Crown Buildings, 31 Chester Steet, Wrexham, LL13 8BG, telephone: 01978 297130 or e-mail keith.garvey@wrexham.gov.uk . Yours, Pam Hughes, Dolydd, Pontfadog
Dear Editor Bus Services I write in support of the letter published by Trudy Foster concerning 'bus transport in the Valley'. We have had the new service in place for three months. It just does not work! There have been many times when in order to return to Glyn Ceiriog, owing to late arrival of buses into Chirk, villagers have been forced to wait an hour to get home. This situation must be addressed sympathetically and improvements made. Reasonable public transport in this rural area is vital to us. Action is needed now! Yours sincerely Barbara Cole
Nature Notes The postman rang on my door, told me he had no mail for me but requested advice. While delivering next door he spotted a bat on their brick driveway. On hearing this I found an old cardboard box and another piece of card and followed him. Sure enough, on the drive was a pipistrelle, alive but sluggish. A word of warning, never handle any bat with bare hands, the risk is tiny but real, some bats carry rabies from the continent. Using the card I put the tiny creature in the box. Left on a cold surface it would have lost body heat rapidly and as all our native bats, is incapable of taking off from the ground. The box was placed in a safe position in that days’ weak sunshine under a piece of plywood, [in case the unusual happened and rain appeared!], a gap of twelve millimetres or so being left, then I did the best thing that can be done for a wild animal, I ignored it. The following morning, accepting there were two possibilities, I examined the box and happily it was empty. To show how tiny these animals are, my books give a weight range of 4 to 8 grams, in old money this is one sixth to one third of an ounce! They are the most common bat in Britain and hibernate for months on end in winter. That these tiny creatures can be so successful fills me with awe, helping one was such pleasure. When it comes to saving lives, we need your support. We are holding the remaining blood donation session for 2010 at The Parish Hall, Chirk on: Thursday, 28 October, 2–4pm and 5.30–7.30pm As you may be aware, in the past we have been unable to accommodate everyone who wished to donate blood in Chirk. As a result of this we have made changes to how we hold our sessions in Chirk which, we hope, will now allow us to accommodate more donors and also allow us to collect more blood from our loyal and generous donors in Chirk and district. Blood is a lifesaving gift given by kind hearted volunteers to help hundreds of people in hospitals across your area every day. Just one donation can potentially save or improve the lives of three people. So, please don’t leave it someone else. Anyone aged between 17 and 65 who weighs more than 7st 12lb and is in general good health can potentially become a blood donor. If you cannot donate because you have had a blood transfusion yourself or you know someone who has received blood, we want to hear from you. From time to time we ask for help in promoting the National Blood Service by getting people who have benefitted from receiving blood to tell their story. You can contact us through the website at www.blood.co.uk or by phoning 0300 123 23 23.

St Ffraids Cake & Plant Stall The weather on Saturday, 7 August was reasonable and the drizzle stayed away just long enough for a fantastic £222 to be raised towards Church funds. Plants and cakes were whisked away almost before touching ground! A sincere 'thank you' to all those who supported our effort and to those who contributed in any way. Also, thanks to Marcus at The Glyn Valley Hotel for allowing us to use his tables. The money raised will help towards ongoing church costs.
Athletics News Gareth Bennett from Dolywern took up athletics four years ago and trains and runs with Wrexham Athletics Club four times a week. Over the years Gareth has regularly run for his club and has represented North Wales . On the 10th July he won a bronze medal in the Welsh Under 20’s Athletics Championships at Carmarthen in the 400 meters. As a result of his success he has been invited to join the Welsh Under 18’s Team in the International Celtic Cup Athletics Match on the 7th August in a competition between Wales , Ireland , Scotland and England . Carnival Committee The AGM of the Carnival Committee was held on July 8th at the Glyn Valley Hotel. The chairman, Mr David Goulbourne expressed his thanks to the committee members, businesses and individuals who had worked to make this year's carnival such a success, he also thanked the organizers and supporters of the Bingo Nights and the table Top Sale, all of which raised the funds needed before hand to stage the carnival. He thanked Mr John White and Mrs Carol Clowes for securing grants which had enabled the purchase of a new marquee and twenty gazebos and twenty tables and the Langford family for organizing the Duck Race. He did feel that although there had been an excellent and well attended carnival, a lack of helpers on the day had been a problem and that it is essential that more help is secured for the event to continue. The treasurer presented a favourable financial report. The election of offices then took place resulting as follows: chairman, Mr David Gouldbourne; vice-chair, Mrs Carol Clowes; secretary, Mrs Lyndsay Nicholson; treasurer, Mr Peter Bates, all others present agreed to being committee members. It was decided to hold next year's Carnival on Saturday, 11 June and several ideas for it were then discussed and it will be decided at the next meeting what will take.
Environmental Action Day North Wales Police joined forces with colleagues from Fire and Rescue and Wrexham Borough Councils Housing dept today, for an 'Environmental Action Day' in Glyn Ceiriog. Three Teams consisting of representatives from the Police, the Fire Service and WBC Housing covered the area offering advice on Crime Prevention, Fire Safety and dealing with any Housing issues that Council Tenants raised. Community engagement was first class, feedback in general was excellent and WCBC County Cllr Barbara Roberts offered her personal congratulations and thanks to all concerned. Around 30 referrals were made to the Fire Service, with a number of faulty smoke alarms being replaced. Some residents requested advice on Crime Prevention from North Wales Police and it was an opportunity to promote the new 101 non emergency Police telephone number and OWL the new 'online' Community Homewatch scheme. WCBC Housing provided skips and assistance to residents for the disposal of abnormal household waste. Given that there are no such facilities in the immediate area, this proved particularly popular and it is estimated that around 20 tons of waste ranging from old appliances and furniture, to garden refuse was recovered. Representing WBC Housing, Dawn Vallance, Alan Roberts and Alex Sievewright. Representing North Wales Fire & Rescue, Andy Robb, Ian Smith and Bethan Roberts. Representing North Wales Police PcSO 2878 Chris Cheshire & PcSO 2932 Emma Owen. The event was hosted by Canolfan Centre Ceiriog's General Manager Mike Thorpe and the Glyn Ceiriog Community Council kindly provided refreshments for all concerned throughout the day.

Quicksteps School of Dance provided entertainment for the children and adults with their dancing, which was enjoyed by all! Some parents had brought along their own stalls with new ideas and kindly donated all the money to the school. We must thank all of the following local businesses for donating raffle prizes for the school.
